EXPECTATION OF PRODUCT:
Welcome to Madison Iron and Wood and thank you for supporting our veteran-owned, family-run business — we're so glad you're here.
Every piece we create is handmade and made-to-order, crafted with care and attention just for you. We don't mass produce anything, and we wouldn't have it any other way. That personal touch is what makes our work special — but it also means each item carries the small, natural variations that come with genuine handcrafted work.
To help you know exactly what to expect, we've put together the policies below. These cover everything from color and finish to welds, personalization, and more, so you can order with confidence and enjoy a great experience with us from start to finish.
Please take a few minutes to look them over, and if you have any questions before placing your order, don't hesitate to reach out — we're always happy to help.
Thank you for choosing Madison Iron and Wood. We truly appreciate your support.
Color Policy
Choosing the perfect color for your décor is exciting — and we want you to love the result. Before you order, please take a moment to read this important information about color and online shopping.
Why Colors May Look Different on Your Screen
Even when retailers do their best to represent colors accurately, what you see on your screen may not perfectly match the physical product. Several factors outside of our control affect color perception, including:
- Photography lighting: Natural sunlight, cloud cover, LED, incandescent, and halogen lighting all render colors differently in product images.
- Your display: Monitor calibration, brightness, contrast, browser settings, and device type can all shift how a color appears. Even two screens sitting side by side can display the same image differently.
- Surrounding colors: A color can look noticeably different depending on what's next to it — a visual effect known as simultaneous contrast.
- Personal and biological factors: Individual differences in vision, and even mood or time of day, can influence how we perceive color.
With so many variables at play, the same color can appear in countless subtle variations from one person — or one screen — to the next.
Our Recommendation: Order a Sample First
Because our products are made-to-order and fully customizable, we strongly encourage customers to order a physical color sample before placing a full order, especially if you need to match a specific hue, gloss, or texture. A small investment in a sample is the most reliable way to ensure the color works for your space or project.
Our Return Policy on Color
We completely understand that color matters, and we always do our best to represent our products as accurately as possible — being misleading about color would not serve our customers or our business.
However, because each item is custom made just for you, we are unable to accept returns or offer refunds based on color perception or color expectations. Once a made-to-order item is produced, it cannot be resold, which is why we ask customers to confirm their color choice with a sample before ordering.
Thank you for understanding. We're always happy to help you request samples or answer questions before you place your order - just reach out, and we'll do everything we can to help you choose with confidence.
Paint Finish Policy
Every one of our products is handcrafted and made-to-order — built and finished individually rather than on a high-volume assembly line. This is part of what makes our pieces unique, but it also means our finishes will not look identical to mass-produced items that come out of a highly automated, tightly controlled factory process.
What to Expect from a Handcrafted Finish
Because each item is painted by hand in small batches, minor variations are a normal part of the process and should be expected. These may include:
- Slight differences in coverage, sheen, or texture from one piece to the next
- Small divots, light spots, or subtle brush or spray variations
- Minor inconsistencies visible only upon close inspection
These characteristics are inherent to custom, made-to-order work — not defects. Close examination of any large hand-finished surface will reveal small imperfections, and this alone does not qualify an item for return.
When Something Isn't Right
That said, we take pride in our craftsmanship and want you to be happy with your purchase. If you believe your item has a finish issue that goes beyond normal handmade variation, please submit a request with clear photos and a description of your concern.
Our team will review each request individually, drawing on our experience to determine whether the issue warrants a return, replacement, or repaint. This decision is made at our discretion, based on whether the finish falls outside the reasonable range of a handcrafted product.
Our Commitment
We stand behind the quality of our work and will always address legitimate craftsmanship concerns fairly. We simply ask our customers to understand that small variations are part of the character of a handmade piece — and part of what sets our products apart from mass-manufactured alternatives.
Welding & Fabrication Policy
Every one of our products is handcrafted and made-to-order — cut, bent, welded, and finished individually by skilled fabricators rather than produced on a high-volume assembly line. This hands-on approach is what gives our pieces their character, but it also means minor variations are a normal part of the process and should be expected.
What to Expect from Handcrafted Metalwork
The following are considered standard characteristics of custom fabrication — not defects — and do not qualify an item for return:
- Weld appearance variation: Because every job requires different welder settings, materials, and techniques, welds may look slightly different from piece to piece. Our welders are highly skilled, but visual consistency from one custom item to the next is not the same as what you'd find in mass-produced parts.
- Weld bumps or heat marks: When welding thin material, it's common for small bumps or discoloration to appear on the opposite surface. This is an inherent part of the welding process, not a flaw.
- Occasional sharp edges or laser dross: We do our best to design out sharp edges and grind away dross left from laser cutting, but as a made-to-order shop, small spots may occasionally be missed on close inspection.
- Weld spatter: Small steel droplets are a natural byproduct of welding. We minimize and grind them when possible, but some may remain in hard-to-reach areas.
- Mild distortion or warping: Cutting, bending, and welding steel at high temperatures can cause slight bowing or warping. As long as the part functions as intended and falls within acceptable tolerance, this is not considered a defect.
- Dimensional and angular tolerances: Typical tolerances for made-to-order work range from 1/16" to 1/8", and may vary depending on the complexity of the piece due to tolerance stack-up. If your project requires tighter tolerances, this must be discussed and specified before your order is placed.
- Weld size and style: The amount and style of weld applied to each part is determined by our experienced welders based on strength, material thickness, and heat considerations. Sometimes heavier welds are needed for penetration; other times lighter welds are used to avoid distorting thin material. Weld aesthetics are ultimately a judgment call made by our team.
When Something Isn't Right
If you believe your item has an issue that goes beyond normal handmade variation — something that affects function, structural integrity, or falls well outside reasonable tolerance — please submit a request with clear photos and a description of the concern.
Our team will review each request individually and, based on our experience and industry standards, determine whether the issue warrants a return, replacement, or repair. These decisions are made at our discretion.
Our Commitment
We take pride in our craftsmanship and stand behind the quality and durability of every piece we build. We simply ask our customers to understand that small variations in welds, finishes, and dimensions are part of the nature of handcrafted, made-to-order metalwork — and part of what distinguishes our work from mass-manufactured alternatives.
If you have specific requirements or concerns about tolerances, weld appearance, or finish, please reach out before placing your order so we can discuss whether we're the right fit for your project.
Product Images vs. Actual Product
We take great care to photograph and represent our products as accurately as possible. However, because every item is handcrafted and made-to-order, small variations between the product shown online and the one you receive are a normal part of custom fabrication.
What to Expect
Even with our high quality standards, you may notice slight differences such as:
- Minor measurement or dimensional variations
- Small weld imperfections or finish inconsistencies
- Subtle paint color or sheen differences
- Slight variations in component placement (such as finials, decorative elements, or hardware positioning)
These kinds of variations are covered in more detail in our Color, Paint Finish, and Welding policies. They are an expected and accepted part of handcrafted, made-to-order work — and noticing these differences on close inspection does not, on its own, qualify an item for return or refund.
When Something Isn't Right
If you feel your item falls outside what would reasonably be expected from a custom fabrication shop, please reach out with clear photos, measurements, and a description of your concern. Our team will review each request individually and determine, based on our experience and industry standards, whether a return, refund, replacement, or repair is warranted.
We reserve the right to approve or deny return and refund requests at our discretion.
Our Commitment
We genuinely want every customer to love their purchase, and we do everything in our power to deliver an exceptional experience. At the same time, we recognize that customers unfamiliar with the custom fabrication process may have expectations shaped by mass-produced products — and those are simply not the same thing.
If you have specific expectations about how your item should look, measure, or finish, please contact us before placing your order so we can make sure we're the right fit for your project.
Personalized Sign Wording Policy
At Madison Iron and Wood, we create a wide variety of personalized signs, and we want each one to feel special. Because every design is laid out differently and requires different information, please take a moment to review how our personalization process works before placing your order.
How Personalization Works
Each of our sign listings is designed with a specific layout in mind. When you enter your custom information, it will be placed into that existing format — meaning the design elements shown in the product photos will generally remain the same, with only your personalized details swapped in.
For example:
- If the sample sign reads "The Smith's" and you enter "Jones" in the personalization field, your sign will read "The Jones's" — the word "The" stays because it's part of the design.
- If the sample reads "EST. 2020" and you enter "2023", your sign will read "EST. 2023" — the "EST." stays as part of the layout.
If the pictured sign shows a particular word, format, or style, please assume that element will appear on your sign as well.
Proofs Are Available — Just Ask
To keep production moving quickly for the majority of our customers, we do not send proofs by default. We've found that waiting on proof approvals significantly slows down production and often frustrates customers who simply want their sign as soon as possible.
If you would like to see a proof before we make your sign, simply request one in the order notes. We're happy to provide one, and we strongly encourage you to ask if you have any question about how your personalization will appear in the final design.
Our Return Policy on Personalized Signs
Because personalized signs are made specifically for you, they cannot be remade, resold, or returned once produced. Please keep the following in mind:
- If we make a mistake — for example, misspelling a name or using information different from what you submitted — that's on us, and we will remake and replace your sign at no cost.
- If your sign is produced exactly as ordered based on the listing's established format (such as "The" or "EST." being included as shown in the photos), it is not eligible for return, refund, or remake.
Our Commitment
We want you to love your sign, and we're always happy to answer pre-production questions or provide a proof when requested. If you're ever unsure how your personalization will look in the final design, please reach out before ordering — a quick message up front is the best way to make sure your sign turns out exactly the way you envision it.
