4x4 Post Caps
These post caps are made to fit a nominal sized 4"x4" post (3.5"x3.5" actual size). This is the most common sized post for fences, decks, and patios. Also, the perfect post to put an eye-catching post cap on!
4x6 Post Caps
These post caps are made to fit a nominal sized 4x6 post (3.5"x5.5" actual size). An uncommon size but definitely essential to our selection. If you have a 4"x6" post, Madison Iron and Wood is one of the only places you will find a decorative metal post cap that fits!
6x6 Post Caps
These post caps are made to fit a nominal sized 6"x6" post (5.5"x5.5" actual size). Another very common size post yet a hard-to-find post cap size.
True Sized Post Caps
These post caps are made for true sized posts. True sized posts are commonly aluminum, plastic, or rough-cut posts. The dimensions for true sized post caps are just that, true to size. This means a 4"x4" post cap is actually 4"x4".

To determine what size you need for your posts, you first need to determine if your post is nominal sized or true sized. If your post is nominal sized it will most likely not be an exact dimension, meaning a "4x4 inch post" is actually 3.5x3.5 inches. A true sized post would be exactly 4x4 inches. Installing a Post Cap is simple. If you got the correct sized post cap for your posts, the cap should be able to just slide over the post. Our caps are made to fit snug so you may need to sand down the sides and corners of your posts.
All you need to do after that is use our color matching screws to secure the cap to the post. This will make sure the post cap never moves for any reason!
