Why You Should Use a Post Cap
Why You Should Use a Post Cap
Post caps add a much-needed cover for the most vulnerable spot on your wood posts. Without a cap, your wood posts are exposed to water, bugs, ice... which can destroy your post from the top, down. As a result of using a post topper, your post will stay looking better for longer. Not to mention, fences are EXPENSIVE. Using a post cap will prolong the life of your fence which will save you a lot of money in the future!

We make each post cap to order in our Madison, IN fabrication shop and take great care and pride in each post cap we make. Our post caps come in a variety of sizes so please check your post size before ordering.
- 4x4 nominal Post caps for 3-1/2" posts - These are the most common size pressure treated deck post that are sold in lumberyards and are commonly called 4x4 post.
- True 4x4 post caps (actual 4" size) - Some hardwood post and even some pressure treated post measure anywhere between 3-5/8" and 4". In these situations you should order a true 4x4 post cap. These also, typically fit 4" metal posts with rounded corners
- True 5x5 post cap - These actually measure 5" underneath and are commonly used for plastic post or post sleeves or undersized wood posts - Note: that we have rounded edges on our post caps so if the plastic post have really square edges these probably will not work.
- 6x6 nominal post cap for 5-1/2" posts - These are the common size pressure treated deck post that are sold in lumberyards and are commonly called 6x6 post
- True 6x6 post caps (actual 6" size) - Some hardwood post and even some pressure treated post measure anywhere between 5-5/8" and 6". In these situations you should order a true 6x6 post cap. Also, these typically fit over metal post with rounded corners.
- Nominal 4x6 Post caps for 3-1/2"x5-1/2" posts - These are for pressure treated 4x6 post that are commonly found in lumberyards - these actually measure 3-1/2x5-1/2".
Please not that our post caps are true to size so if the post are a little over they may need to dry or be sanded down somewhat for the post cap to fit properly. Our post caps are made to fit tight to help bind the post from splitting unlike others that do not. We believe post caps should serve a purpose to help preserve your post not just for decoration. If you want to understand this more please see our post cap installation video for more details under the "installation" tab on our website.
Finial Size for 4x4, True 4x4 and 4x6 post caps are: 4"x4"
Finial Size for 5x5, 6x6, and true 6x6 are: 6"x6"
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
- Our post caps are powder coated in a large variety of colors for long outdoor life in a high quality powder coat with UV inhibitors to resist fading in the sun and are typically fine for most locations. If you live in coastal areas that have a "salty" environment or these will be in high traffic areas we would suggest to add the zinc option.
- What is the zinc option? - our zinc option is an additional process where we put a thick zinc powder coat base layer primer before we put the final coat on. This will insure your post caps last an extremely long time under bad conditions. But, this expense isn't necessary for most locations.
- Our post caps are made to fit tight and have rounded corners so as to limit sharp edges so this should be taken into account when ordering.
- We pre-drill holes on two sides and provide matching powder coated screws for a very finished touch
- Our post caps are made from tough thick gauge steel and are much more robust and heavy duty than most other post caps you will find so you know when you order ours you are making an investment not just ordering a cheap cap that will do.
- We make each post cap to order, with your particular finial, and the size you request in the finish you request. - This is a lot of variation to offer, which is why we do not offer returns or exchanges on most products as they are in fact customized to your order. So, please check your measurements and ask questions if needed.

Our 4x6 post cap is made to fit a nominal 4"x6" post (3.5"x5.5"). Unfortunately, we do not offer a true 4x6 post cap due to its odd size.
Post Toppers
Our fence post toppers are made to bolt onto the top of any type of wood post. Although they don't add as much protection as our fence post caps, they still keep some water and bugs out while adding a very decorative metal touch to your posts! Instillation is easy for these. All you need to do is place them on your post and secure them with our color matching screws.
Our metal post caps are made to fit tight so your fence post, mailbox post... will stay looking new for longer. As a result of this, some trimming of the post may be necessary. Installation Instructions are included in each package and is also on our website.

Post Cap Care Guide
Post Cap Care Guide
Want to keep your post caps looking fresh? Follow this care guide to keep your post caps looking like new!
Cleaning: Although our caps are made with slick, water repelling paint, they still get dust and dirt on them over time. The best way to clean all the dust and dirt off your caps is with a water hose or a wet rag.
**It is very important that you avoid chipping the paint and exposing the metal underneath the paint. This will cause rusting on your post cap.
General Care/Maintenance: If you find any large scratched or chips that expose metal, you need to seal/paint that area asap. You can get your post cap paint matched at most paint stores. We recommend using an Exterior Oil-based paint.
